very slow wave called a beat it was possible to pin down the wavelength and frequency of different types of light (and hence its speed) with remarkable accuracy. By the early 1980s, light speed was measured at between 299,792,457 and 299,792,459 metres per second. But this presented a new problem. The second had been de ned for some while by an atomic clock, measured with incredible accuracy by the unchanging oscillation of a caesium atom as it icks between different levels of energy, but the metre was de ned by the wavelength of the light emitted by a krypton atom, and this measurement wasn t as accurate as that of light s speed. So light speed, measured in metres per second, was known more accurately than the exact length of a metre. Something had to give. In 1983 it was decided to x the speed of light for once and for all as 299,792,458 metres per second. At rst glance this seems impossible. How can we arbitrarily give an exact value to something that is a property of the universe, not a man-made concept The answer is because the metre was rede ned in terms of light speed. The metre is now 1/299,792,458th of the distance light travels in a second. As measurements get better and better, our idea of what a metre is will subtly change, but light speed is xed forever. At least that was the assumption until recently. In 2000 a Portuguese physicist based at Imperial College, London, published a paper suggesting that the speed of light might not always have been the same.

The C/A code really has a repeating sequence of 1023 bits, however, the design is slightly more complicated than presented above The C/A code is actually a Gold code , which is derived by taking the XOR of the output from two linear feedback registers Unique C/A codes can be generated for each satellite by selecting different pairs of cells from each register to de ne the output In summary, the C/A code is a unique Gold code on each satellite, which is a pseudorandom sequence of bits with a repeating sequence length of 1023 C/A bit transitions occur at 1023 MHz Note that the fundamental frequency in the satellite is 1023 MHz, so this represents one transition every 10 cycles At this rate of bit transitions, the full sequence of 1023 bits is transmitted in 1 ms Therefore, the sequence repeats 1000 times per second.

and Eq. 3.24 becomes lim Kc/R 1 C cos2 D 1/M W c!0 !0 where K D H 3/16 . For modest-molecular-mass polymers, only a simple concentration extrapolation (to zero) should be necessary to eliminate interparticle interference. As the molecular mass increases, intraparticle interference becomes important and requires both a concentration and an angle extrapolation (to zero). The scattering functions are related to sin2 /2 so the extrapolation plot (Zimm plot) (9) is a plot of Kc/R vs.k c C sin2 /2 as shown in Figure 3.15, where k is an arbitrary constant to provide an extrapolative grid (cf. Exercises 3.4 and 3.5). A schematic of a laser light-scattering photometer for making such measurements is shown in Figure 3.16. Because polymer molecules vary in structure in solution, corrections must be made that take account of the dissymmetry expected for the polymer in a given solvent. The dissymmetry can be estimated from the intrinsic viscosity in the same solvent and approximate molecular mass of the polymer. Details can be found elsewhere (1, 2). Other corrections must also be made for polymers that absorb part of the light being passed through the solution (10). Thus, light scattering has not been used extensively with metal coordination and organometallic polymers because of extensive absorption in the visible region where light scattering measurements are normally made. 3.27

21: Implementing Web Services The generated class HelloService sets the endpoint URL as a constant called HelloServicePort_address to the value http://localhost:8080/axis/HelloService.jws, which it read from the WSDL file. It also provides two getHelloServicePort() methods. One takes a java.net.URL as an argument and returns a HelloServicePortType that is communicating with that address. The other doesn't take any arguments and uses the first version of getHelloServicePort() to return a HelloServicePortType that is communicating with the final value storied in the HelloServicePort_address variable.

The chip length (distance between bit transitions) is 293 m Therefore, the sequence repeats every 300 km P Code The P code is also generated from a combination of two different registers, in such a way that it repeats every 2664 days Each 7-day section is assigned a PRN code Satellites are often identi ed by their PRN number; however, the user should note that any given satellite can have its PRN code changed Therefore, PRN codes should not be used in place of Satellite Vehicle Numbers (SVN) when talking about particular satellites (For example, if someone writes software which identi es satellites using PRN numbers, there might be a problem in orbit modelling, for example, PRN 2 is assigned to a Block II satellite now, but to a Block IIR satellite next year.

Nuts are a good food choice, but with nuts you can definitely have too much of a good thing. Nuts are a good source of protein, help raise your good (HDL) cholesterol and lower your bad (LDL) cholesterol, provide phosphorous, are rich in Vitamin E, and contain fibre. A downside to eating nuts is that they contain lots of calories (1 4 cup/50 ml of nuts has 175 calories). That s why you should consume them in limited quantities. Nuts are a healthier snack alternative to chips or cookies, but only if the portion size is limited and the nuts aren t fried or covered in chocolate, sugar, or salt.
