One of the benefits of using an advanced IDE for debugging is that some of them even have the ability to offer debugging support throughout the entire lifecycle of a running Web application including both JSP execution and Java source execution We conclude the chapter with a brief look at how to debug the Virtual Trainer application JSP content as well as Java source using Oracle JDeveloper 10g Oracle JDeveloper s JSF development experience will be examined in more detail in 17; however, the next few paragraphs introduce how to debug both JSP and Java source code using an advanced JSF-enabled Java IDE such as JDeveloper NetBeans, JavaStudio Creator, Eclipse, and other IDEs have this capability, but we focus on JDeveloper here to increase the breadth of coverage We ll forgo the source code importation aspect and assume you have a running version of the Virtual Trainer application inside JDeveloper s development environment Since JDeveloper supports JSP source debugging, let s first mark a few lines in the edit_tejsp (Edit Training Event) page by clicking the left side of the JSP code editor to insert a few breakpoints As Figure 16-9 shows, notice that JDeveloper s visual JSP editor also shows the page in its runtime appearance By inserting breakpoints in the JSP source code, at runtime, the execution of the JSP will halt at the line specified and allow for full inspection of all runtime variables After inserting JSP breakpoints, you can switch to the Java code editor and, in the same fashion, insert breakpoints in the EditTejava class which serves as a backing bean to the edit_tejsp page (See Figure 16-10) Now that debug points have been put in both JSP and Java source, you can start the application in debug mode This will launch JDeveloper s internal J2EE server (OC4J) and invoke a browser to access the application After you log in to the application and then click one of the Edit links for a specific Training Event, the debugger will halt execution and JDeveloper will return to the forefront and display the source in debug mode At this point, you can step through the lines of the JSP line by line or resume execution until the next debug point While the application is halted, you can inspect all the application s objects in memory at this current moment using the debugger s various windows (See Figure 16-11) Of most use is the Smart Data debugger window It provides the developer with a live view of the most pertinent application data at runtime The other debugger windows are useful, as well as the call Stack window, which shows the call stack for the current thread For this run-through, click the Resume button to continue rendering the page in the browser At this point, the focus is back on the browser and you can change a value in the Edit Training Event form, such as the status or the online trainer advisor, and then click the Update button As the action method in the EditTejava backing bean executes, it will again halt at the second debug point, as shown in Figure 16-12.
